Eco-Experience Camp offers exceptional opportunity for ten motivated science students, ages 15-18, to be paired with professional biologists and ecologists in an intensive 12-day session of field research and natural history studies. While hiking mountains, canoing rivers and camping out, teens learn and have fun searching for birds, uncovering salamanders, studying forest management and testing water quality. Short essay and recommendations required --see info and application online.

I'm on the board of this conservation organization nestled in the arboreal forest of the Northeast Kingdom and have attended the "end-of-camp" presentations done by the teens. They are always full of enthusiasm and good humor about their new experiences and getting to know some college professors. The young woman from Chicago overcame fears of "sleeping outside with bears" and was excited about taking her experience and knowledge back to the science museum where she is a docent. Highlight for another was the ice-cream treat after pulling loosestrife out of a stream. Banding birds at night and catching and recording info on small mammals-shrews and moles proved popular for some--and "icky" for others--but they all persevered with lots of good-natured ribbing among the teens and the mentors. This is a special, unique experience in a special corner of Vermont. ...more
