Martial Way Self Defense Center
Colchester – Milton – Saint Albans

Since 1988 Martial Way Self-Defense Center has been providing high quality martial arts for children and adults in Vermont. Their children's programs will help channel kids energy in a productive manner! Their programs increase young students confidence, discipline and motor coordination - while having fun all at the same time!

SUMMER CAMP

Does your child need more exercise? Not motivated by team sports? This camp is open to kids age 5 to 13, and provides a fun, action-filled alternative. This is one of our most popular and successful events. Kids have fun, get great exercise, and learn a lot. Camp is a great way for a beginner to get an introduction to the martial arts, or for an experienced student to enhance his or her abilities and enthusiasm. Experienced martial arts students typically come out of camp week with renewed confidence, energy, and motivation. Beginners come away with an exciting new hobby. Camps are $150/wk.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES

Birthday Parties are usually held on Saturday afternoons at 1:00 PM. They can accommodate up to twenty children but recommend eight to twelve. They entertain the group with a fun, informal martial arts class with the birthday child as the "star" participant, for an hour. While this is going on, parents can set up food and gifts to be enjoyed here at the school, or back at home after the class. They send out the invitations and give a gift of a Martial Way T-shirt. They have a small table and some chairs and benches. Parents provide refreshments, gifts, and party favors if desired.

My 13 year old son recently started taking Jr. Kempo for the first time at Martial Way. As he was already a teen, we opted to begin with some private lessons to bring him up to speed so that he wouldn't feel out of place with the younger beginners who might be 8 or 9 in the same class with him, yet more advanced.

Dave has been amazing. He has brought our son's self confidence level up ten-fold since he started there. He has fostered an actual love of Martial Arts in our son. He asks to go to the studio and has now joined the twice-weekly group lesson.

During the private lessons my son has really learned the art of self defense. Dave is really good about teaching when it appropriate to use it, which I appreciate. In the group classes the kids learn a lot, review their moves, get a good work out and also have fun. Classes always end with a game and lots of team work.

The kids really seem to enjoy working hard towards earning the next stripe or belt and praise each other at the end of class when one has achieved that goal. Yet I never get the sense that there is competition among them, each are working at their own pace.

When my child was younger he tried Tae-Kwan-do and just didn't connect with that discipline. I can't recommend Martial Way enough if you are looking to try another form of Martial Arts.

We highly recommend Martial Way Self Defense! Our son attended the program at MWSD from the age of 6 until 13, when we moved to CT. He became an accomplished brown belt while there.

Dave Quinlan (owner), and all the instructors, are excellent. Their program is very holistic in that it combines self defense with responsibility, respect, leadership, giving (ask about their Katathon!), and self discipine.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to participate (that doesn't happen at all karate studios), and the instructors model respect and postivie reinforcement.

Dave has created something very special at MWSD, and it is worth the trip to Milton or St. Albans to get your child involved. (Their adult classes are fantastic, too.)

My daughter started at Martial Way in September 2009. She enjoys the classes, the instructors, and works hard to earn her next stripe or belt. I enjoy the structure, instructors, and discipline/patient that is taught.
The kids are encouraged to do their best, not miss classes, and listen. Highlights - love the fun games they play in the last part of the class, plus my daughter had her birthday party here and it was great!

My boys (ages 4 and 5) have been taking martial arts classes at Martial Way for about six months now and absolutely love it! My 5 year old enjoys the class so much we decided to have his birthday party at Martial Way – it was a HUGE success!

The instructor(s) are very patient and attentive to the children in this high-energy class and provoke much laughter and fun. The class size is small and is structured so the children learn some basic marital arts techniques while promoting concentration, respect/listening skills, and safety. The instructor(s) are very creative with ways to keep the children focused and involved. Class typically ends with a challenging “obstacle course” exercise that everyone gets very excited about. As a parent, I appreciate the time spent on “stranger danger” and safety do’s and don’ts.

My boys have gained confidence while becoming more coordinated and disciplined as a result of the class and we intend on being a part of the Martial Way community for years to come!

I am a middle school teacher whose students have been involved in a variety of martial arts programs offered through Martial Way for many years. I can say with complete confidence that my students have benefited from their martial arts experiences in many ways.

I have witnessed my students grow in self-esteem, develop a positive work ethic, and leave with an I-can-really-do-it attitude...and it's been fun! My own son enjoyed Martial Way lessons and camp, too!...more

Our family has been really happy with our son's experience at the Martial Way in Milton. The instructors are very patient and calming, very respectful of the children in teaching the techniques and in describing the scenarios in which one might use them. The class is a good workout for our high-energy ten year old, and pushes him to do his best. We've seen an increase in his self-confidence, and we like that he is working towards a personal goal during class....more

My son started at the Martial Way Self Defense Center when he was 7 years old and will continue to train even as he starts college this Fall. The Martial Way remains an important and rewarding part of his life.

He said recently, "One of the good things about going to a local college, I can still train at the Martial Way"

It continues to be a great experience for both of us.

My 4 1/2 year old son has recently started at Martial Way and it's been great discipline for him. I can see him focus when he's there and while he hasn't quite figured out the coordination yet of all the moves, he loves the environment and instructor. They are very patient with the kids!

My only complaint would be that there isn't enough one-on-one time spent when taking the class, so I'm afraid he's not learning how to correctly do some of the kicks, etc. However, he's young and for him it's more about fun now anyway.

I would recommend Martial Way if you are looking for an activity for your child that is fun and great exercise, while teaching them self control, patience and discipline.
