Whether is a school break or summertime and you just need to head out of town for the day, why not pair a visit to the Montshire Museum with a kids' baking class at King Aurthur? They are only minutes apart in Norwich, VT.

Head to the Museum first - doors open at 10:00 am. The cooking classes usually begin at 1:00.

Montshire Museum of Science (approx 95 miles south of Burlington. Directions)

This is a great hands on museum with indoor and outdoor activities offering many exciting exhibits that relate to the natural and physical sciences, ecology and technology. On a nice day, its great to explore the outdoor science park and hiking trails. There is plenty to do for all ages.

King Arthur Flour: Kids Baking Classes (left out of Montshire, under highway, first left onto Rte. 5., King Arthur is 1/4 mile on left)

Classes are held in their Baking Education Center which has stainless steel tables, lots of cooks tools, a wood fired pizza oven and all sorts of other great gadgets. Topics range from cookie making to wood fired pizza. Check the schedule as it changes often.

Even if you don't take a class, this is a great pit stop after the Montshire. They have a small cafe with tasty sandwiches and treats (the Montshire has no food) and an amazing shop for anyone who loves to cook!

Last April break my kids, their grandma and I packed the car with snacks and DVDs, and headed down south for the day. We can't get enough of the Montshire! Both inside and out, it is always swell. In the nice weather the kids want to spend a ton of time outside splashing around. This means you can relax on the bench and still keep an eye on your kids from the sidelines.

Then we headed over to King Arthur in the early afternoon and took the pizza dinner class. The kids not only learned how to make the dough, but also proper measuring and kneading techniques, as well as cooking etiquette. We left with a delicious pizza and salad for the car ride home. We still make this pizza dough weekly.

The Montshire Museum is just a wonderful place, educational but really fun for the family. It isn't as close as we might wish, but totally worth the drive. And, as has been mentioned, the King Arthur Flour store is very near....and there are ready made, didn't put your hand to the oven, treats!

the cooking classes for kids at King Arthur's are very well done (no pun intended!) Organized, great information but not overwhelming. We made pizzas, cooked them there in the brick over, & left with our pizza, a salad each person made for themselves, and, best of all, a dessert. For the neat freaks out there, this is a great way to share cooking with your children or grandchildren but not getting high blood pressure over the mess in the kitchen. It was fun and the kids enjoyed it as well as the adults....more
