Orienteering is a sport that you use a map and compass to find your way across unfamiliar terrain.  Whether you have been doing it for years or are interested in learning this important skill, join us for a day of orienteering at Shelburne Farms.  A clinic will be held for families just learning from 9:00-10:00 AM with the orienteering courses starting at 10:00 AM. This is a perfect opportunity for Scouts and other groups!

Beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses will be available.  Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Walk-ins welcomed.

This sophisticated scavenger hunt isn't for kids who still say "carry me". We choose the intermediate course which will take you 2.9 km through the trails of Shelburne Farms up hills, through the woods, across the meadows and sometimes off trail. All the while you are looking for the Orienteering markers placed along the way. When you find one, you punch your card with the special hole-punch to show you have been there. Using your provided compass and map, you end up back at the Farm Barn where you turn in your card and get your team's time. Hopefully had a chance to enjoy an adventurous outdoor day with your kids and arguably some of the best fall foliage around.

Note: It took us nearly 2 hours to complete with our 7 and 10 year olds. And we were glad we had snacks (granola bars and water) to keep us fueled and hydrated.

I did this with my son when he was 6 years old. We had a great time racing through the fields and woods. For 2 hours you get to run/walk around beautiful SF during peak foliage season, spend some quality time with your child, and compete as a team. We plan to do it again this year. Good weather adds to the fun and enjoyment, and don't be tempted to take short-cuts, they can be troublesome especially for the younger kids.
