The Giant Pumpkin Regatta
Ages: 0 and up
Cost:
Parking: No
Features:
The Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce and Linking for Learning to Life have come up with something to do with those enormous 1,000 lb pumpkins you all see at the county fairs. They are holding the second annual Great Pumpkin Regatta.
The Regatta features local business leaders, students, and others racing in giant hollowed-out gourds, in a competition of size and speed. Located near the Coast Guard Ramp on the Burlington Waterfront, this year’s event will feature a Pumpkin Festival with food vendors, activities and entertainment. While it sounds both impossible and crazy, it is indeed a boat race, but the boats are giant carved pumpkins, which are decorated and placed into the lake with forklifts, and raced as if they were kayaks. Last year’s event was featured on MSNBC and spoofed on Saturday Night Live and made the Sports Illustrated “Most Ridiculous Competitions” list.
What is a Pumpkin Regatta you ask? Check here to see pictures from another great pumpkin regatta - looks kinda cool.

Participants get to cut open, hollow out and decorate giant pumpkins donated by the VGVGA (Vermont Giant Vegetable Growers Association). Corporate sponsors purchase the pumpkins (proceeds go to United Way) and their teams decorate and pilot their vessels. Many teams added fanfare to the event...more
